Who Makes Passion Works Art? Meet the Artists at the Heart of the Studio

by Koki Oyuke

Every Passion Flower, every painting, every piece of jewelry that blooms from Passion Works Studio is made by artists with vision, heart, and hands full of possibility. That may sound simple or even expected, but it’s everything. Passion Works Studio isn’t just a brand with a mission tacked on. From its roots to its petals, our studio is a living, breathing community of artists. At its center are creators with developmental differences, and everything we share with the world begins with their unique spark. Here’s a window into who these artists are, and how this creative home was shaped around them.

Artists First

How we speak matters. We hire artists with developmental differences. They're not clients or beneficiaries, and certainly not people who need to be kept busy. They are artists, through and through. It’s about a truth we’ve seen for more than 25 years. People with developmental differences make art that is original, moving, and deeply desired. Our core artists show up, create, and their work finds its way into homes and hearts near and far.
This way of seeing turns its back on an old, tired story where people with developmental differences were sidelined, given repetitive, thankless work for pennies. Passion Works Studio was born as a joyful, radical alternative. Give people real tools, real freedom, and a real place to create, and they’ll make real art. Our Passion Flower (Athens’ official city flower) is living, lasting proof.

How Collaboration Works

What makes Passion Works truly sing is collaboration. Our studio is alive with teamwork between core artists, staff, volunteers and visitors all working side by side. A single piece might be shaped by many hands. Whereas one person cuts the aluminium plates, another paints it, another brings it to life with a final flourish before it is finally bent and assembled. Paintings might start with a single gesture and grow as others add their magic. Collaboration weaves richness and diversity into every work, and it embodies our deepest belief that art and community are best made together.

Collaboration opens doors wide and lowers common barriers of creation. Not every artist creates in the same way, and we're built for that. If someone can move a brush or simply light up at the sight of color, there’s a place for them here. If someone loves constructing big, bold things, we make space for that too. Draw it, build it, write a poem, or sing a song. Every expression is welcome here.

The Staff Artists & the Wider Circle

Surrounding our core artists is a vibrant circle of staff artists who work side by side every day, making their own art and helping others do the same. Over the years, we’ve been blessed by more than twenty visiting artists and thousands of volunteers, each bringing new perspectives and bursts of energy. Students from Ohio University have joined in, taking Passion Works poems and turning them into songs with local musicians. This steady stream of people keeps our work fresh and our community ever-growing.

The Impact of Being Seen

For the artists themselves, though the paid, meaningful work matters enormously, the studio offers something that reaches well beyond a paycheck. It offers purpose, belonging, and the experience of being seen as a maker of valued things. Art becomes a vehicle for self-expression and for connection with others. Visitors to the studio, and people who encounter the work out in the world come away with their assumptions about disability challenged. The art changes how people think and reframes conversations about developmentally different individuals.

Seeing is Believing

The truest way to understand Passion Works is to experience the art itself. If you’re able, come see for yourself. Every painting, every flower, every piece of jewelry carries the touch of a real person’s imagination. Each work is a living connection to our mission. The moment we ring your order in, a piece of the soul of our studio and artist moves into your home and hands.
That’s our invitation. See our artists as artists. Honor their creativity as something rare and beautiful. Recognize the worth and ability that too often gets overlooked. For more than 25 years, we’ve seen that when we treat people with developmental differences as the artists they are, remarkable things happen. The proof is everywhere: on our walls, blossoming in gardens, and traveling home in the hands of everyone who brings a piece of Passion Works into their life.
When you support Passion Works by buying a piece, making a donation, or simply walking through our doors, you are supporting our extraordinary artists and the joyful, caring community they’ve built inside our Athens, Ohio gallery of wonders.
